Description |
('Attacking the Grizzly Bear.') The Mandans and Hidatsas warned Lewis and Clark that they would encounter a bear so big, so ferocious, and so hard to kill that they needed to be particularly careful around it. Although somewhat doubtful at first, the members of the Corps of Discovery soon learned the truth of the warning. It was more feared than any animal on the prairies, according to Catlin, who depicted the Indian method of hunting it only in a group, mounted, and with lances. The first hunter to drive his lance has drawn the fury of the bear to his own horse, exposing the bears side to the lance blows of the other hunters. [From 'Science Goes West' catalog] |
