Description |
('Buffalo Hunt. Surround.') This scene depicts a hunting technique that Catlin witnessed in 1832, called a surround. Sixty or seventy hunters would encircle the herd and gradually force the animals to the center. In the space of 15 minutes, a whole herd of two or three hundred would be destroyed. One of the hunting weapons was a lance, twelve to fourteen feet in length. It was never thrown, but was given a quick, instant thrust as the rider leaned from the side of his horse, guiding the lance through his left hand and pushing with his right. One blow was generally all that was required. [From 'Science Goes West' catalog] |
