About this collection

In this collection, major advances and innovative applications illustrate the history of attempts to tell time precisely. Examples include non-mechanical sundials and water clocks to measure the Sun’s changing position, early mechanical clocks, the invention of the pendulum, and the eventual introduction of spring balances for clocks and watches. This image collection is based on the Linda Hall Library exhibition On Time.
