About this collection

This collection features complete works on the pursuit of knowledge regarding natural objects from the 17th to the early 20th century. Topics covered include zoology, botany, geology and associated fields. Items within the collection reflect the inspiration towards exploration; the desire to identify, name, and catalog hitherto unknown flora, fauna, and minerals; and related works. The collection contains Martin Lister’s Historiae Conchyliorum, the first published catalog of shells; works famous for both preliminary identifications and their beautiful illustrations; Mark Catesby’s The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands; Maria Sibylla Merian’s Metamorphosis Insectorum Surianamensis; and Robert Ridgway’s significant endeavor towards scientific standardization, A Nomenclature of Colors for Naturalists.
