About this collection

Based on the extension course, Emblematic Science, offered by Prof. William B. Ashworth, Jr., in the winter of 2015, the collection seeks to assemble in one place all of the illustrated title pages and frontispieces from books in our History of Science Collection published between 1482 and 1730.  Engraved title pages and frontispieces were frequently used in the 17th century to present visual statements about the contents of an individual book, or to wage visual arguments and debates that extended over a long series of publications.  These illustrations often used motifs drawn from mythology, history, iconology, and emblem books, as well as current science.
