Inspired by the exhibition Out of This World: The Golden Age of the Celestial Atlas, this collection expands on the works shown in the exhibit and encompasses works from 1482 through the 19th century. The materials range from striking but rudimentary wood block prints, to some of the most lavishly beautiful and accurate scientific books ever published. The collection includes major works in the depiction of astronomical information, as well as later popular pictorial atlases. It highlights the work of significant astronomical scientists including seminal publications by Johann Bayer, Johann Bode, and John Flamsteed. Works in this collection are reproduced as bound, with both text and illustrations, recreating the context of viewing the original print material.
